Storm Damage Response Checklist

1. Safety First (before anything else)

If you smell gas, see downed wires, or the structure looks compromised — leave and call 911 before any of this.

• Everyone accounted for and out from under any sagging ceiling
• Checked for downed power lines near the house — stayed clear
• Did NOT climb on the roof or a ladder (leave that to insured pros)
• Placed buckets / moved valuables under any active drips

2. Document From the Ground

Dated photos are the foundation of any insurance claim. Take more than feels necessary.

• Photographed all four sides of the house, wide shots
• Photographed visible roof damage (phone zoom / binoculars help)
• Photographed shingles, flashing, or debris where it landed in the yard — before moving it
• Photographed dented gutters, siding, windows, AC units, or vehicles
• Photographed every interior stain, drip, or wet spot
• Noted the date and approximate time of the storm

3. Limit Further Damage (keep receipts)

Policies require 'reasonable steps' to prevent further damage — and reimburse them.

• Moved furniture and valuables away from wet areas
• Contained water with buckets/tarps inside
• Called for professional emergency tarping if water is actively entering
• Saved receipts for every emergency expense

4. Start the Paper Trail

• Scheduled a professional inspection BEFORE filing (know your scope first)
• Located my homeowner's policy and checked the wind/hail deductible
• Reviewed whether damage exceeds the deductible before filing
• Filed the claim (if warranted) and recorded the claim number
• Arranged for my roofer to attend the adjuster meeting
